RIO DE JANEIRO, RJ, BRAZIL, March 23, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Russian Helicopters holding company, part of State Corporation Rostec, and the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) have delivered technical and operational documentation for the Mi-171A2 helicopter to the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency.

Brazilian aviation authorities will decide on the certification of the helicopter for the local market based on its application.

“Brazil is our long-time partner and one of the key countries in South America for the promotion of Russian helicopter products. Mi-171A1 helicopters have been successfully operating in the country for more than 10 years, and I am sure that the new helicopter will soon also have the opportunity to earn a positive reputation. Brazil’s certification authority is processing the documentation received on the Mi-171A2. Considering experience certifying the Mi-171A1 helicopter, I think that this issue will be resolved in a short time,” said general director of Russia Helicopters Andrey Boginsky.

“In light of Brazil’s high demand for mid-class multipurpose helicopters, we are bringing to the local market a new machine — modern, roomy and reliable. The Mi-171A2 helicopter provides long range, which is important for a country where the machines are operated in hard-to-reach areas. We intend to develop after-sales service as part of an international partnership to guarantee maximum operational life and as a prerequisite for flight safety,” added director of the Rostec aviation cluster Anatoly Serdyukov.

In 2005, the Mi-171A1 helicopter optimized for the requirements of European commercial operators and the FAR-29 aviation regulations received approval for the Type Certificate in the Brazilian Aviation Register. During its development, special attention was paid to safety issues. In the same year, the first Mi-171A1 helicopter was delivered to Brazil.

In 2010, the Mi-171A1 helicopter, presented by the operating company Atlas Taxi Aereo, won a Brazilian state oil and gas company Petrobras tender to carry out aerial work in the Amazon due to its positive characteristics and price/quality ratio.

The T-HUMS system (onboard monitoring and diagnostics system) was installed in the new Mi-171A1 helicopter for the first time on an order by the Brazilian company. It provides automatic monitoring of a large range of nodes in real time, significantly increasing flight safety. The use of the T-HUMS system also makes it possible to transition to maintenance “as-is,” and not according to the regulations, which can significantly reduce the financial costs of the operating company and increase the efficiency of the helicopter business.

Mi-171A1 helicopters were used by Atlas Taxi Aereo in harsh environmental conditions to support Petrobras drilling in the rainforests of Brazil, and they showed their best side. In a year of intensive operation, one helicopter, for example, flew more than 1,000 hours (an average of 120 hours per month), moving about 600 tons of cargo, mainly drilling equipment, on an external mount.

The Mi-171A2 was developed based on this helicopter, the result of a thorough modernization of the Mi-8/17 helicopters. More than 80 changes have been made to the design of the Mi-171A2. The helicopter is equipped with VK-2500PS-03 engines (a civilian version of the engines installed on the Mi-28 combat helicopters) with a digital control system. One of the most important differences between the Mi-171A2 and the helicopters of the Mi-8/17 family is the new carrier system. The helicopter has a more efficient X-shaped tail rotor and a new main rotor with integral composite blades with an improved aerodynamic layout. In August 2017, the helicopter received a Type A certificate from the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, which indicates implementation of the most stringent safety requirements for civilian helicopters.

The 13,104 square foot modular building was designed and constructed by Modular Management Group, Inc. In addition, the company will also provide the lease of the building.

The facility will serve as a temporary administrative office in support of the 19th Air Force during the renovation of their existing building.

The floor plan includes a vestibule, 21 offices, open spaces for office cubicles, two conference rooms, two IT rooms, break room, restrooms, storage and a janitor’s closet. The modular building is equipped with canopies, steps and ramps meeting all ADA requirements.

PARKER, COLORADO, USA, March 21, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — When aircraft are removed from service, they are often sent to a boneyard, such as the one at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. For the Marine volunteers of the VMAQ Monument Foundation, this was not an acceptable ending for the EA-6B Prowler. For many months, VMAQ Monument Foundation volunteers actively canvassed potential museums to assist in finding suitable homes for these historic jets. The Foundation is thrilled to report that the final three EA-6B Prowlers have landed at esteemed aviation museums in Ohio, Texas and Virginia.

On Friday, March 8, 2019, the EA-6B Prowler was officially decommissioned at a ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, marking the end of a distinguished era in airborne electronic warfare. According to a command release, “Marine Corps Prowlers have flown over 260,000 hours during its 42-year service life. Marine squadrons have deployed with the Prowler more than 70 times in support of every major combat operation in the last forty years.” The Prowler and the warriors who flew and maintained her were present in operations El Dorado Canyon, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Deny Flight, Decisive Endeavor, Deliberate Guard, Allied Force, Northern and Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Unified Protector, and most recently Inherent Resolve and Freedom’s Sentinel.

Just days after the decommissioning, on Thursday, March 14, 2019, the last operational EA-6B made its final landing at Dulles International Airport. This aircraft, tail number 162230, will soon be on display at the National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Laurence Burke, curator of U.S. Naval Aviation at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum was present for the arrival of the aircraft at Dulles and instrumental in securing its transfer. “Electronic warfare is an absolute necessity in modern combat, yet the National Air and Space Museum had no EW airplanes in the collection. The Prowler, as the first tactical jamming aircraft designed as such from scratch, fills this hole in a big way,” said Burke. “Furthermore, the fact that Prowlers participated in practically every US combat operation since its introduction in Vietnam lets us tell many late 20th/early 21stcentury stories, even as the type’s longevity lets us talk about the development of electronic warfare over time.”

The Foundation’s treasurer, Major Harry “Taco” Horning, USMCR (IRR) streamed the landing on Facebook live. Many from the Prowler community watched with heavy hearts as the plane made its final landing. “Hearing the engines spool down for the final time was gut-wrenching. But the sadness was short-lived. Once the jet was towed into the restoration hangar, I was overwhelmed with pride!” remarked Horning. “I can’t think of a better conclusion to our story.”

Two months earlier, on January 17, 2019, tail number 163047, was flown to the MAPS Air Museum in North Canton, Ohio. Their mission is to educate the public on the history of aviation and its impact on man. To accomplish this, they acquire, restore and display aircraft and memorabilia associated with aviation. Lieutenant Colonel Maureen McFarland USMC Reserve, a former electronic countermeasures officer (ECMO) from the EA-6B community is a supporter of this museum. She coordinated with the MAPS Executive Director Kim Kovesci and a team of dedicated people pitched in to make this aircraft transfer a reality. McFarland now has a Prowler in her own backyard in North Canton. “I’m incredibly proud of MAPS and the work the museum does. Ohio has a rich legacy in aviation from the Wright Brothers to John Glenn. I love that part of that history is now the aircraft that launched my career,” said McFarland.

A third VMAQ-2 Prowler, tail number 162228 made its final landing at Dallas Love Field on March 12, 2019 and will reside at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, Texas. Cheryl Sutterfield-Jones, President and CEO of the museum is excited to add the Prowler to their unique collection of aircraft. “Although the technology of the EA-6B is being replaced with more modern technology, the electronic and radar capabilities of the aircraft will become an important STEM lesson for than 40,000 students a year. This EA-6B will have a brand new mission at the Frontiers of Flight Museum!” Although the Foundation did not assist in the placement of 162228, they are excited to celebrate with the Museum at their upcoming Prowler Party on April 13!

These aircraft along with the many men and women who flew and maintained them, quietly and valiantly, protected countless lives and served our nation well.
