Yemeni Army Strikes Houthi Positions Amid Escalating Fighting

(MENAFN) The Yemeni army carried out airstrikes against Houthi positions in the southwestern province of Taiz as military operations intensified across the country, with separate strikes reported in Sanaa and Saudi air attacks reported in northern Yemen.

In a statement, the Taiz Military Axis said its forces targeted Houthi positions, gatherings and vehicles at al-Maqrami, al-Jaasha and al-Sallal hills east of Taiz city. Additional targets were reported at Hisn al-Mukhaf and the Bala’an area along the Aqrouz front in the southern part of the province.

The military command did not disclose information about potential casualties or the extent of damage caused by the strikes.

Separately, reports indicated that attacks had taken place in the capital, Sanaa. However, the available accounts did not identify the party responsible for those strikes or provide details about possible casualties and material losses.

In the northern province of Saada, Houthi-run media reported six Saudi airstrikes targeting Majz district and Saada city. Rocket fire was also reported in Sahar district, adding to the military activity in the area.

Amid the escalating confrontation, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree vowed that the group would continue targeting Saudi airports despite international and United Nations calls for the attacks to stop.

In a statement posted on X, Saree warned airlines, aviation workers and passengers against using Saudi airports or entering the country’s airspace, claiming that these locations and routes could be targeted.

The warning followed a deadly Houthi attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday. According to Saudi civil aviation authorities, the strike killed 12 people and injured another 309.

The latest developments reflect a widening confrontation, with fighting in Yemen intensifying since July and attacks extending into neighboring Saudi Arabia. The threat against aviation facilities has also raised concerns about passenger safety, air traffic and the security of critical civilian infrastructure.

Yemen’s conflict began escalating into a full-scale war after the Houthis seized Sanaa and several other provinces in September 2014. In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government, deepening a conflict that has continued for years.

The renewed strikes and threats against airports underscore the challenges facing efforts to contain the fighting and prevent further regional escalation.
