Amy Shira Teitel examines the overlooked scientific discovery that could have changed the course of World War II

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, October 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Midcentury historian and author Amy Shira Teitel explores the history of the atomic bomb and the overlooked scientific discovery that raises a provocative question: What if Germany had recognized the potential of nuclear fission years earlier?

“I’m interested in the moments when history could have taken a different path,” says Teitel. “The race to the atomic bomb was shaped by scientific discoveries, political decisions, and timing. Looking closely at those factors can reveal just how different the outcome might have been.”

Teitel examines that possibility in a new video on her second YouTube channel, Amy Shira Teitel, accompanying a new two-hour documentary on her main channel, The Vintage Space, about the Manhattan Project and Nazi Germany’s parallel nuclear research program, the so-called Uranium Club.

The full documentary takes a deeply researched look at the development of the atomic bomb, examining not only the American effort but also Germany’s nuclear research and the broader scientific and political landscape that shaped the race to the bomb.

The companion video takes that history in a different direction, using Teitel’s research and expertise to explore an alternate historical scenario: What if scientists had recognized nuclear fission earlier, giving Germany additional time to pursue an atomic weapon?

At the center of that question is a remarkable moment in the history of nuclear physics.

“In 1934, Enrico Fermi conducted experiments bombarding atoms with slow neutrons and produced results that, in retrospect, involved nuclear fission,” Teitel explains. “But he didn’t realize what he had achieved. Even a chemist who suggested that uranium might actually have been split wasn’t taken seriously. That missed interpretation is fascinating because it shows how much the course of history can depend on recognizing what a scientific discovery actually means.”

The significance of Fermi’s results would become clear several years later, when scientists identified nuclear fission and began to understand its extraordinary potential.

“If that discovery had been recognized earlier, Germany might have had more time to pursue nuclear weapons,” Teitel speculates. “The interesting part is looking at what we know about the science, the scientists, and the political circumstances of the period and then asking how a change in one part of that timeline could have affected everything that followed.”

Rather than creating a fictional history without context, Teitel uses the historical record as the foundation for exploring how a different scientific timeline could have produced very different consequences.

“This is ultimately about understanding the history as deeply as possible,” Teitel states. “The real story is already extraordinary. The alternate-history question gives us another way to examine the science, the decisions, and the circumstances that brought the world into the nuclear age.”

The projects also form part of Teitel’s continuing research into the history of the atomic bomb and her work toward a forthcoming book on the subject, coming in late 2027 from Bloomsbury Sigma. Additional details about the book have not yet been announced.
