The Cashmere-Dryden Airport welcomes visitors on Sept. 12 for its annual celebration of aviation and the county-owned airport’s role in Chelan County.
Cashmere-Dryden Airport Day is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the airport, 5500 Sullivan St. in Cashmere.
The one-day event is held annually on the same weekend as the Chelan County Fair to draw visitors already headed to Cashmere. About 500 people attend each year.
Now in its fifth year, the celebration offers free activities for all ages. Visitors will get a close-up view of about 50 single-engine airplanes on display, along with antique cars and helicopters from the Washington Army National Guard, Chelan County Sheriff’s Office and Life Flight Network. The Cashmere Fire Department also plans to bring a backcountry wildfire-fighting vehicle.
The day includes kid-friendly activities and food trucks and snacks for purchase. Always an annual hit, the event features large-scale RC aircraft demonstrations throughout the day. The remote-controlled aircraft are about 6 feet long with up to a 10-foot wingspan and will be flown over the airport. Wenatchee Red Apple Fliers is leading demonstrations throughout the day.
Opened in 1950, the municipal airport in Cashmere primarily accommodates single-engine aircraft and helicopters. It is home to nearly 50 based aircraft. It is the only airport owned by Chelan County, averaging 3,500 operations a year.
"Besides providing an aviation base for almost 50 aircraft and a destination for visitors, the airport plays an important role as a secondary firefighting base for the Upper Valley," said Bill McGlynn, an advisory board member for the airport and a pilot of 30 years. “Airports provide important transportation infrastructure. As the old saying goes, ‘a mile of road will take you one mile, but a half mile of runway will take you anywhere in the world.’"
