WASHINGTON, D.C., USA, May 30, 2020 / — The National Space Society applauds the successful launch of two Americans to the International Space Station—the first from American soil in nearly a decade—today aboard a SpaceX rocket. NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken launched aboard SpaceX’s new Crew Dragon capsule and will remain on the ISS for at least a month before riding the capsule back to Earth.

After a weather-related scrub on Wednesday, the Demo-2 mission got underway today, Saturday, May 30.

The Demo-2 mission demonstrates the wisdom of NASA’s public-private cooperation with SpaceX, which (along with Boeing) won Commercial Crew Capability (CCTCap) contracts in 2014 to deliver astronauts to the International Space Station. Boeing was awarded $4.2 billion and SpaceX $2.6 billion for six crewed flights to and from the ISS starting in 2017. However, both companies suffered congressional funding shortfalls and technical challenges that delayed the development of their spacecraft.

The NSS's Senior Operating Officer Bruce Pittman remarked, “The CCTCap program was itself modeled on an earlier and remarkably successful public-private NASA program from 2006 called the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program. That program resulted in SpaceX’s Dragon capsule and Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus capsule carrying supplies to the ISS starting in 2012. That resounding success served as a groundbreaking model for NASA’s commercial crew program.”

Now out of production for half a century, the Engineering and Research Corporation Ercoupe was a civil aircraft market super-success in postwar America. One of a number of vintage airplanes today coveted by enthusiasts, ERCO Ercoupe owner Samuel Brozina, from Millville, New Jersey, explains more as he continues to delight in his passion for aviation.

"Something of a rarity among more modern civil aircraft such as Cessnas and Pipers, today, vintage airplanes are in big demand," explains Brozina, a licensed pilot. Samuel is also the proud owner of his very own ERCO Ercoupe, a low-wing monoplane aircraft designed and built in the United States until the start of the 1970s.

Subsequently out of production for some 50 years, Samuel Brozina is among the latest individuals to get his hands on an ERCO Ercoupe. "Today a rarity with fewer than 1,000 ERCO Ercoupes still registered to fly in the U.S., even among fellow pilots and aviation enthusiasts, the most common question I'm asked about my own airplane is, 'So, what exactly is it?'" reveals Samuel Brozina, clearly amused by the puzzled expressions often met in response to his rare vintage airplane.

First manufactured by the Engineering and Research Corporation shortly before World War II, following the war, several other manufacturers subsequently continued its production until 1970. "It was in the late 1960s that the bottom started to fall out of the civil aircraft market," suggests Ercoupe expert Samuel Brozina, "ultimately putting an end to the production of the now increasingly rare airplane as a result."

Marketed in its day as the future of personal travel, as well as claiming to be the world's safest plane, peak ERCO Ercoupe sales reached more than 6,000 annually. "Now, however, less than 2,000 survive," explains Samuel Brozina, a fan of the fixed-wing aircraft since childhood, "with more than half of those sadly no longer registered to take to the skies."

Samuel Brozina, who holds a private pilot's license, says he's always been a particular admirer of World War II-era warbirds. In something of a case of good fortune, Brozina's own vintage aircraft came from a seller in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, less than 100 miles away from his Cumberland County home in Millville, New Jersey.

Such a fan of the Engineering and Research Corporation is Samuel Brozina that the pilot has even commissioned a one-of-a-kind ERCO jacket patch since purchasing his own plane. Designed especially and manufactured as just one-of-one, more generally, jacket patches and pilots, Brozina says, go together like bread and butter. "As a pilot, I'm no exception!" he suggests.

International Student Entrepreneurs Awarded Top Honors in 2020 Conrad Challenge Virtual Innovation Summit

HOUSTON, TEXAS, USA, May 29, 2020 / — Seven teams of high school-aged student innovators from around the world were awarded top honors during the 2020 Conrad Challenge Virtual Innovation Summit, held May 27-29 on the Hopin platform. The Summit was the final round of the 2019-20 Conrad Challenge, the annual competition that unleashes the potential of students to use their innovative and entrepreneurial skills to create solutions for some of the most pressing global challenges. More than 600 teams of 2-5 students between the ages of 13-18 entered the 2019-20 competition, a Conrad Challenge record.

This was the 14th year of the Conrad Challenge, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Innovation Summit was held online for the first time. This successful pivot in event planning allowed the Summit to proceed and gave these deserving students the opportunity to experience the culmination of their year-long efforts.

The Challenge began in August, when teams submitted their initial entry and worked on their investor pitch, which they completed in November. Qualifying teams then advanced to the second round in mid-November and worked through mid-January to develop and refine a business plan, market study and visual representation of their commercially viable solutions. Their products were then reviewed and scored by subject matter experts and judges before the finalist teams in each category were selected.

The 37 finalist teams who competed for top awards at the Virtual Innovation Summit hail from eight countries: Australia, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Vietnam and the United States. Each presented their new product in one of six categories: Aerospace & Aviation; Cyber-Technology & Security; Energy & Environment; Health & Nutrition; Transforming Education Through Technology; and Smoke-Free World. After submitting a video pitch and executive summary the week prior, the student teams participated in a live-video question and answer session with the panel of judges with expertise in business, industry, research and academia.

Due to the pandemic, we were unable to host our in-person Innovation Summit at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
